During Sunsets for Kate I have invited others to share a sunset story. This post is from Emily who has a sister with Usher syndrome.
Emily Ripley from Kansas City, Missouri
Where and when was the sunset taken?
This sunset was taken in Newport Beach, California in February 2017 while my sister, my mom and I were on vacation together.
Why were you inspired to capture this moment?
My sister Alex had never seen the ocean before and upon her request we traveled to Orange County to make this dream come true!
My sister Alex (left of my mom and I) has Usher Syndrome.
“For we walk by faith and not by sight” – 2 Corinthians 5:7
This verse is my daily inspiration, along with my sister.
Almost three years ago my younger sister who is 23 was diagnosed with Usher Syndrome. She was born with over 50% hearing loss in both ears and will gradually go blind overtime. This diagnosis was so shocking and saddened my entire family. Although this news was hard to hear my sister has not given up and continues to fight everyday. She struggles with depth perception, she lost peripheral vision and has a hard time adjusting to regular daily tasks we all take for granted. The scariest part for me is knowing one day she will wake up and her whole world will be dark. She won’t see anymore beautiful sunsets, she will forever have to imagine those scenes only in her mind.
Every time I go on an adventure I think of her. I think about how happy she would be in that moment just for a second it would seem as though nothing was dark or quiet in her life. It would be full of sunsets, and ocean views, mountain tops and trees so tall and green.
She would feel invincible just like I do when I’m exploring God’s many creations. I will continue to be inspired by her faith through the struggles she faces and I hope this story will inspire all of you!
And finally, I have not yet met you or Alex. If we could meet and share a sunset drink anywhere in the world, where would that be? Wish as if anything is possible.
You never know, a sunset fairy may just grant us this sunset wish!
If Alex could enjoy a sunset anywhere in the world she would choose Maui, Hawaii.
Thanks for allowing me to share her story!
You’re an inspiration to our USH family!
Dear Emily, I was so touched by your story. I have two brothers (who would do anything for me) but I don’t have a sister and you make me wish I had a sister like you. Thank you (and Alex) for sharing your sunset and story. I look forward to that Hawaii sunset drink by the sea, and maybe for the night I can pretend to have two sisters!
