During Sunsets for Kate I have invited others to share a sunset story. This post is from Rick who has Usher syndrome.
Rick Brouwer from Vlaardingen, Netherlands
Where was the sunset taken?
Cliffs of Moher, Ireland
Why were you inspired to capture that moment?
It was and still is a magical moment. I was never before in Ireland. I have met Deborah Heffernan and Carol Brill (both with Usher syndrome) via twitter and Facebook. Deborah and her husband participated in 2014 in the Glendalough trail. I thought that was so cool, as a runner I wanted to do that trail also. And that happened in late October 2015. Together with my buddy, I went to Ireland. The first few days we were able to stay with Carol Brill.
I want to share another photo, of me running with my buddy Ceel, on the Glendalough trail, at almost the highest point of the trail with a beautiful view.
After the trail we traveled further with a rental car to the Cliffs of Moher. For the time of year, the first of November, it was very nice weather for Irish standards. This allowed us to take beautiful magical pictures of the sunset.
Like me, you have Usher syndrome. Do you mind me asking what you will miss if you can no longer see?
I think a lot, the wedding of my both children and birth of grandchildren. It grabs me by the throat to think of it. That’s why I still enjoy the small tube where I can look through.
And finally, you and I have not yet met. If we could meet and share a sunset drink anywhere in the world, where would that be? Wish as if anything is possible.
You never know, a sunset fairy may just grant us this sunset wish!
Australia is still high on my wish list. I’m sure you can recommend me a very nice place in your country. This with a beer or a nice glass of wine, I will certainly enjoy our sunset.
Rick, I think many with Usher syndrome would like to join us in Australia for that sunset drink. One day, hopefully, one day soon.
And I say a big ‘bedankt’ to you Rick. I know writing in a second language is not easy so I appreciate you sharing this sunset with me.
